Roof Buying Season runs from November 1 through February 28. In colder parts of the country, that's when work starts to get few and far between for many roofing contractors. That can shift who has leverage. A homeowner who needs a new roof can ask contractors to compete while their schedules are lighter, and negotiate on price, materials and warranties.
There is a second reason to shop early. Shingle makers have often announced price increases in winter that take effect in spring (for example, April 1 in 2024 and 2025).
If the install is months away, get the price, the materials and the date the quote expires in writing, ask whether the price can change before install, and keep the deposit small.
You may not have to wait for spring. Many roofs can go on in winter when the weather cooperates and the crew follows the shingle maker's cold-weather requirements. Ask about it, or lock in a spring date.
