A manufacturer-backed roof warranty is a promise from the shingle maker, not just the roofer, and the upper tiers cover installation errors as well as product defects. Only a contractor in the maker’s program can offer it, on a qualifying system, and the contractor has to register it. So the name on the bid, Golden Pledge, Platinum Protection or SureStart PLUS, tells you more than the shingle brand does.
This guide covers GAF, Owens Corning and CertainTeed, read from their current warranty documents in October 2026. It does not say what your homeowners policy pays. That is a question for your policy and your insurer.
What does a manufacturer-backed warranty add to the shingle warranty?
Every GAF, Owens Corning and CertainTeed shingle comes with a basic warranty against manufacturing defects, and anyone can install it. The enhanced tier adds three things. The first is the installer: the maker lets only contractors enrolled in its program offer it. The second is the system: you have to buy the maker’s matching accessories, such as starter strips, ridge caps, underlayment and vents, not just the shingle. The third is the remedy: a longer full-value window, tear-off and disposal paid when a repair needs them, and on the upper tiers, coverage for installation errors.
On GAF’s own comparison chart, the base shingle warranty and the basic roofing system warranty list tear-off, disposal and workmanship as not covered (GAF warranty comparison guide). A contractor’s own workmanship warranty, CertainTeed notes, typically runs one to five years (CertainTeed Roofing 101).
The insider point. In the first two years, both documents put the repair of an installation error on the contractor. If the contractor is unable or unwilling, Owens Corning says it will arrange the repair, and GAF says it will if it determines the contractor is unable or unwilling and the error is within the warranty’s coverage (GAF Golden Pledge sample warranty, Owens Corning Platinum Protection). Our reading, not either company’s wording: after year two, installation-error claims under these tiers go to the manufacturer under the warranty’s terms, so the coverage does not depend on the roofer still being in business.
How do the top warranties from the three manufacturers compare?
The table shows terms for a single-family home. “Full value” means non-prorated: the maker pays the full reasonable cost instead of a share reduced for the roof’s age. Terms come from the 2026 warranty documents listed under Sources.
| Warranty | Contractor the maker requires | Installation-error coverage | Defect coverage at full value | Tear-off and disposal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GAF System Plus | GAF Certified, Certified Plus or Master Elite | None | 50 years | Covered when necessary |
| GAF Silver Pledge | GAF Certified Plus or Master Elite | 10 years (Timberline NS, HDZ, HDZ RS); 15 years (AS II, UHDZ) | 50 years | Covered when necessary |
| GAF Golden Pledge | GAF Master Elite | Lifetime for the original owner, full value for 25 years (HDZ, HDZ RS) or 30 years (AS II, UHDZ) | 50 years | Covered when necessary |
| GAF President’s Club | Master Elite with a current 3-Star President’s Club award | Lifetime for the original owner, full value for 40 years | 50 years | Covered when necessary |
| Owens Corning System Protection | Owens Corning Platinum or Preferred Contractor | None | 50 years | Included |
| Owens Corning Preferred Protection | Owens Corning Platinum or Preferred Contractor | 10 years | 50 years | Included |
| Owens Corning Platinum Protection | Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor | Lifetime for the original purchaser, full value for 25 years, reduced after | 50 years | Included |
| CertainTeed SureStart PLUS 3-Star | CertainTeed credentialed contractor | None | 50 years | Included |
| CertainTeed SureStart PLUS 4-Star | CertainTeed credentialed contractor | 15 years | 50 years | Included |
| CertainTeed SureStart PLUS 5-Star | CertainTeed ShingleMaster PREMIER | 30 years | 50 years | Included |
For comparison, the plain shingle warranties give full value for far less time. Owens Corning’s standard warranty lists a 10-year full-value period on its lifetime lines, and GAF’s base warranty lists 10 years (Owens Corning standard warranty, GAF chart).
What do GAF System Plus, Silver Pledge and Golden Pledge require?
GAF ties each tier to a contractor level and a count of GAF accessories. GAF’s chart lists three qualifying accessories for System Plus, four for Silver Pledge, and five for Golden Pledge, and Golden Pledge works with any Timberline shingle except Timberline NS. The accessories are GAF ridge cap, starter strip, leak barrier, roof deck protection and attic ventilation products (GAF chart).
GAF says a contractor enrolled in its program is not a GAF employee or agent, and that contractors in its program must be licensed and insured where required, and that it also considers years of roofing experience and customer reviews (GAF, choosing a roofer). Master Elite is the level GAF allows to offer Golden Pledge. Certified Plus can offer Silver Pledge and System Plus. Certified can offer System Plus only. President’s Club, for Timberline UHDZ, AS II or Designer shingles (Designer per the President’s Club sample warranty, RESWT219L; GAF’s chart lists UHDZ and AS II only) with five accessories, needs a Master Elite contractor holding a current 3-Star award.
What Golden Pledge covers: manufacturing defects in the GAF products, plus misapplication of those products and of flashings at valleys, dormers, chimneys, sidewalls and plumbing vents. During the full-value period GAF will arrange the repair or provide replacement products and reimburse the full reasonable cost of labor and other materials, with tear-off and disposal included if necessary (GAF Golden Pledge sample warranty, RESWT161L-0426).
The insider point. The Golden Pledge document says it does not take effect unless the eligibility requirements are met, the warranty is registered to you, and your roofing contractor has been paid in full. It also says failure to install adequate ventilation is not an application error. Ask when the contractor registers, and ask about ventilation before the work starts, not after a leak.
What do Owens Corning System, Preferred and Platinum Protection require?
Owens Corning sells three extended warranties on top of its standard one. All three give a 50-year full-value defect period on lifetime shingles (15 years on Supreme) on single-family homes with tear-off and disposal included, against 10 years on the standard warranty, and all three must be installed and registered by a contractor in Owens Corning’s program. System Protection adds no workmanship coverage. Preferred Protection adds 10 years. Platinum Protection adds lifetime workmanship coverage for the original purchaser, at full value for the first 25 years and reduced after that (Owens Corning warranty overview, Platinum Protection, Pub. 10020608-O, Preferred Protection, Pub. 10020609-P, System Protection, Pub. 10020610-P).
Platinum Protection has to be installed by what the warranty calls a Platinum Preferred Contractor. Owens Corning’s comparison page calls the same requirement a Platinum Contractor, so ask which tier the contractor holds and confirm it with Owens Corning. The system has to cover the whole roof over a ventilated deck, with Owens Corning shingles, Owens Corning synthetic underlayment or ice and water barrier, Owens Corning Hip & Ridge shingles, and two more qualifying products from a short list that includes starter shingles and VentSure ventilation.
The insider point. Under Platinum Protection, if a claim leads to the entire roof being removed and replaced, the warranty is void and the owner receives a standard Owens Corning warranty. The workmanship coverage is also the part that does not travel well: it is for the original purchaser, and if the home is sold after year 20 it ends at transfer.
What do CertainTeed SureStart PLUS 3-Star, 4-Star and 5-Star require?
Every CertainTeed shingle carries standard SureStart protection, which pays 100 percent of materials and labor for defects during the SureStart period, usually 10 years. SureStart PLUS extends full coverage for up to 50 years on a single-family detached house, adds tear-off and disposal at 3-Star, and adds workmanship coverage of 15 years at 4-Star and 30 years at 5-Star. It requires a CertainTeed Integrity Roof System installed by a CertainTeed credentialed contractor (CertainTeed SureStart brochure, code 13-00-5674-NA-EN, 01/26).
CertainTeed’s 5-Star brochure says only a ShingleMaster PREMIER can offer 5-Star, and lists PREMIER requirements, including: at least 75 percent of the company’s installers hold the Master Craftsman credential, two or more employees hold the Shingle Quality Specialist credential, the company carries workers’ compensation and liability insurance, and it has been in business five years or held the ShingleMaster PRO credential for a year, or has comparable experience CertainTeed accepts (CertainTeed 5-Star brochure, code 13-00-5673-NA-EN, 01/26; copy hosted on a contractor site). CertainTeed’s credential pages describe the two individual credentials in the ladder (Master Craftsman, Shingle Quality Specialist). CertainTeed’s Roofing 101 page says ShingleMaster PRO and PREMIER contractors can offer 4-Star or 5-Star, while the 5-Star brochure is specific that only PREMIER can offer 5-Star. We did not find a CertainTeed document that names which credential a 3-Star requires, so ask.
The insider point. The 5-Star brochure says all metal flashings on the roof must be replaced to qualify. A bid that reuses old step flashing or chimney flashing cannot be registered at 5-Star. The brochure also lists the Integrity Roof System components: waterproofing underlayment, water-resistant underlayment, starter shingles, shingles, hip and ridge, and ventilation.
CertainTeed’s transfer terms for SureStart PLUS run to the first subsequent owner for 15 years at 3-Star, 20 years at 4-Star and 20 years at 5-Star. For structures other than single-family detached houses, the 50-year term is 25 years at 3-Star and 30 years at 4-Star and 5-Star.
Who registers the warranty, and by when?
The contractor registers it, and each manufacturer sets the deadline in its warranty. The table below shows what we found.
| Manufacturer | Who registers | Deadline | Homeowner fee stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| GAF | The contractor, for System Plus, Silver Pledge, Golden Pledge and President’s Club | Within 45 days of installation. If you have no warranty copy 60 days after the job, contact GAF | None stated |
| Owens Corning | The contractor, for System, Preferred and Platinum Protection | Within 60 days of installation | None stated for registration; $100 to transfer |
| CertainTeed | The contractor, for SureStart PLUS (the standard warranty needs no registration) | Not found in the documents we read | None stated |
The basic warranties are different. GAF says its basic warranties do not need registration, only your proof of purchase, Owens Corning’s standard warranty lists no registration requirement, and CertainTeed’s 2026 warranty says registering is not required and not registering does not void it (GAF, CertainTeed 2026 Limited Warranty, code 00-02-5540). The enhanced tiers are the ones that depend on the contractor filing paperwork. None of the documents we read describes an inspection of the finished roof before the warranty issues. Owens Corning reserves the right to inspect the roof when you make a claim, and GAF may ask for photographs and product samples.
Claims have a clock. GAF and Owens Corning both require notice to the manufacturer within 30 days of discovering the problem. GAF adds that telling your contractor is not notice to GAF, and both say that repairing or replacing the product before the manufacturer evaluates the claim may get it denied.
Can the warranty be transferred to the next owner?
Usually once, with conditions. GAF’s sample enhanced warranties allow one transfer, with written notice to GAF within one year after the property changes hands. If the transfer is in the first 20 years the second owner gets the same coverage, and after that the coverage shrinks to a two-year period (GAF Golden Pledge sample warranty). Owens Corning allows one transfer within 60 days of the sale, with proof of purchase and a $100 fee. A transfer in the first 20 years on a lifetime shingle leaves the balance of the full-value period and a 25-year workmanship period. A later transfer cuts the remaining coverage to two years and ends workmanship coverage. Owens Corning’s wind and algae coverage transfers in full (Owens Corning Platinum Protection). CertainTeed’s SureStart PLUS transfer windows are listed above.
“Lifetime” has a boundary. GAF defines it as lasting while the original owners, or a properly transferred second owner, own the property, and it applies only to single-family detached homes owned by individuals. Condominiums, associations, apartment buildings and other owners get 40 years on GAF (GAF chart).
What do these warranties not cover?
Read the exclusions before the sales page. Across the GAF and Owens Corning documents the same items keep showing up: hail and winds above the warranted speed, foot traffic and objects falling on the roof, inadequate ventilation, products the manufacturer did not sell, and damage caused by rooftop equipment such as satellite dishes or solar panels. The wind speeds each brand warrants are in our wind ratings guide, and what a Class 4 label does and does not promise is in our Class 4 guide.
A manufacturer-backed warranty is also not a claim on your homeowners policy. Whether your policy pays for a storm loss is a question for your policy and your insurer.
What should I ask a roofing contractor about manufacturer-backed warranties?
Ask for the warranty by name, not for “the manufacturer warranty.” Then ask every contractor the same follow-ups so the answers line up side by side.
- Which warranty will you register on my roof: GAF System Plus, Silver Pledge or Golden Pledge, Owens Corning System, Preferred or Platinum Protection, or CertainTeed SureStart PLUS 3-, 4- or 5-Star? Please write the name on the bid.
- Which credential does your company hold with that manufacturer, and where can I confirm it on the manufacturer’s own site?
- Which accessories are in the bid, by product name, and do they meet the count and type the warranty requires?
- On a CertainTeed 5-Star bid, are all metal flashings being replaced?
- Who files the registration, by what date, and will you send me the confirmation and my copy of the warranty?
- Is the warranty included in the bid, or is it a separate line? Does anything have to be paid before it is issued?
- If an installation error shows up in the first two years, who comes out, you or the manufacturer?
- Does the roof have the ventilation the warranty expects?
Put the answers on one page. Our roof bid comparison worksheet has a row for the warranty, and the contract checklist covers what to have in writing. If one bid looks much cheaper than the rest, check whether it leaves out the tier the others include: see when one roof bid is much lower. GAF runs a lookup page for checking whether a contractor is in its program, and Owens Corning and CertainTeed each run contractor locators.
Where Otter Quotes fits
Otter Quotes creates a written scope of work for your project and sends it to multiple contractors. Contractors who receive the scope can submit bids on that same scope and the same measurements. You compare the bids online, next to reviews and licensing information, and sign online without a salesperson in your home. Subcontractors bid too, so you may be able to work directly with the crew that does the work. We do not work with your insurance company. We are not a contractor, we do not sell upgrades, and we do not offer inspections or assessments. Contractors pay Otter Quotes a fee on the accepted bid.
Frequently asked questions
What does a manufacturer-backed roof warranty cover that the shingle warranty does not?
The shingle warranty covers manufacturing defects. The manufacturer-backed tier adds a longer full-value window, tear-off and disposal when a repair needs them, and, on the upper tiers, installation errors. GAF Golden Pledge, Owens Corning Platinum Protection and CertainTeed SureStart PLUS 4-Star and 5-Star include installation-error coverage. It is only available through a contractor the manufacturer’s program allows to offer it.
Who registers the warranty, and by when?
The contractor does. GAF’s sample warranties say the contractor must register within 45 days of installation, and Owens Corning’s require registration within 60 days. CertainTeed lists its SureStart PLUS coverage as installed and registered but we did not find a deadline in the documents we read. Ask the contractor for the registration confirmation.
Can a GAF or Owens Corning enhanced warranty be transferred to the next owner?
Once. GAF’s sample warranties allow one transfer, with written notice to GAF within one year of the property changing hands, and the second owner keeps the same coverage if the transfer happens in the first 20 years. Owens Corning allows one transfer within 60 days of the sale, with a $100 fee stated in the warranty, and Platinum Protection’s workmanship coverage ends on a transfer after year 20.
Is CertainTeed's 5-Star workmanship coverage 25 or 30 years?
CertainTeed’s current SureStart PLUS brochure and its credentialing page list 30 years for 5-Star and 15 years for 4-Star. A separate CertainTeed consumer page still says 25 years in one sentence. Go by the brochure and the certificate your contractor registers, and ask to see both.
Does Otter Quotes work with my insurance company?
No. We do not work with your insurance company, we do not offer inspections or assessments, and we are not a contractor. Otter Quotes creates a written scope of work for your project and sends it to multiple contractors, who can submit bids on that same scope. Questions about your policy go to your insurer.
