About Architectural Shingles

Baseline manufacturing standard. Asphalt architectural shingles are made to ASTM D3462, the standard specification for glass-mat asphalt shingles. It sets the minimum qualifications every compliant shingle has to meet — tear strength, fastener pull-through resistance, granule adhesion and dimensional tolerance. A shingle that does not meet D3462 is not a code-compliant roofing shingle.
Wind rating is tested to ASTM D3161 (Class A = 60 mph, Class D = 90 mph, Class F = 110 mph) or ASTM D7158 (Class D = 90 mph, Class G = 120 mph, Class H = 150 mph). Most architectural shingles carry Class F or Class H. Higher numbers you see advertised — "130 mph", "150 mph" — are manufacturer limited-warranty figures, not test classes, and they are conditional on a specified nailing pattern plus the matching starter and ridge products being installed.
Impact/hail resistance is tested to UL 2218, rated Class 1 through Class 4 (Class 4 is the highest available rating — see the impact class step below).
Some product lines also carry Miami-Dade County product approval (NOA) — a regional certification for Florida's high-wind building code, not a national minimum every architectural shingle has to meet.
Manufacturer lines mainly differentiate on impact/hail class, wind rating, algae resistance, and warranty length.

Color availability varies by manufacturer — expect a range of options, but not every color is offered by every product line.

Class 4

Maximum hail protection — withstands a 2-inch steel ball under UL 2218. Usually achieved with SBS polymer-modified asphalt or a reinforced backing, depending on the manufacturer. Often qualifies for insurance premium discounts.
